More Than a Photobook. A Piece of Black History. A Collector’s Item.

An extended limited release of a powerful archival art book documenting nearly a decade of Black joy, culture, community, and resistance in Durham, North Carolina.

Presented as a 240-page hardcover volume in its own custom-designed slipcase, Black August in the Park: An Archive of Radical Joy & Resistance in the City of Durham brings together more than 500 breathtaking black-and-white photographs capturing the people, moments, expressions, connections, and energy that have made Black August in the Park such a meaningful gathering.

Photographed over nearly a decade, this collection is more than a record of an event. It is a visual archive of Black life in Durham—of families, artists, activists, entrepreneurs, elders, children, friendship, love, style, music, celebration, and community.

Every photograph contributes to a larger story: our story, documented by us, preserved for generations to come.

Created to be both a fine-art photography book and a cultural artifact, this special volume is accompanied by a custom slipcase designed specifically for the book. The slipcase protects the hardcover while elevating the entire presentation into a beautiful collector's piece—one meant to be displayed, treasured, and preserved.

This is a book for the coffee table today and the family archive tomorrow. A book to revisit, share, gift, collect, and pass from one generation to the next.

When you capture what you love, you create art that has beautiful impact.

One of my guiding mantras as a storyteller, photographer and just as a person is one of the quotes of my favorite photographer of all time, Gordon Parks: “I picked up a camera because it was my choice of weapons against what I hated most about the universe: racism, intolerance, poverty.”

I am driven by my love of people but more so, Black people from all over the world. I love capturing the humanity of a people of my people.
